Narrated by Cashel-Day Lewis and starring Sylvie Field, Complexity & Contradiction (2023) presents a 5-minute short shot in Rome that retraces Robert Venturi’s by-now infamous steps for his landmark publication. Wine Country (2024) comprises a poetic rumination on the apparatus of Napa’s viticulture with a cogent view of the American and Californian landscapes, providing ‘a meditation on the cultural and spiritual ties to landscape’. An unscripted narration in Spanish by David’s father underlays ad paces the film. It features at this year’s 19th International Architecture Exhibition Intelligens.Natual.Artifical.Collective at La Biennale di Venezia. The pairing bookends the discourse of architecture over the last sixty years while addressing current pressing issues of environment, landscape, immigration, people (gens) and a view into film making as a practice of architecture.
David Hurtado holds a Master of Architecture from Cambridge (2024) and a Bachelor of Arts from Yale. Oscar Sangalli Peña is a second-year postgraduate in architecture at St John’s. David’s first sketches for Wine Country will be on view as will the first edition of Complexity and Contradiction published by the Museum of Modern Art in 1966. All are welcome.
