Her second book, "Genocide: Personal Stories, Big Questions" tells the story of the last 120 years of genocide, its impact on the world and its relevance today. The word was coined by the Jewish-Polish lawyer Raphael Lemkin in his 1944 book 'Axis Rule in Occupied Europe'.  Although genocide was not then a crime under international law, the term appeared in the indictments at the Nuremberg Trials in 1945/46. Post-Nuremburg, the 1948 Genocide Convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948. The International Criminal Tribunals for Yugoslavia (ICTY), and the equivalent for Rwanda, were established in the 1990s. And a permanent International Criminal Court was finally established in 2002.Genocide may be a tough topic, but remembering that our aim is to initiate a conversation about the most important of today’s cultural, ethical and moral issues, it is still sadly a very relevant one and events in Israel/Gaza all demonstrate how relevant the subject remains.Many questions follow. How many need to die before something becomes a Genocide, rather than ‘just’ an atrocity, a war crime, ethnic cleansing, or a crime against humanity? And does ‘never again’ start with each one of us – or are we just bystanders? If not, what can we do?
