'Tyrwitt’s Tramway from Princetown to Plymouth' by Simon Dell

Long before steam trains reached Devon, Sir Thomas Tyrwhitt had an extraordinary vision — a tramway stretching 25 miles across Dartmoor to connect Princetown with Plymouth’s harbour. His aim was bold: to turn the moor into an agricultural and industrial powerhouse, exporting granite and bringing vital supplies back to the heart of Dartmoor.

This remarkable project became Devon’s first iron railroad and even included one of the earliest railway tunnels in the world — yet today, few people have ever heard of it.

In this talk, Simon Dell brings the story to life after several years of research and personally walking the entire route from Princetown to Sutton Harbour. He reveals how Tyrwhitt’s Tramway later evolved into the Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway, often confused with the Great Western line built decades later.
