- **Event Name**: The Brain & the Senses at the Phoebe Needles March Center for Lifelong Learning
- **Event Start and End Date**: Tue, 10 Mar, 2026 at 09:30 am – Tue, 10 Mar, 2026 at 12:30 pm
- **Event Description**: The human brain is the most complex and remarkable organ we possess—yet most of us experience only a small glimpse of what it truly does. In this engaging and easy-to-follow presentation, participants will take a guided tour of the brain and the senses, exploring how brain structure and function shape the way we think, feel, and interact with the world.

Through colorful slides and real-world examples, we’ll uncover fascinating and little-known facts about the brain, including the roles of hormones and enzymes that quietly influence mood, behavior, and decision-making. We’ll also examine how the brain grows and changes across the entire life span, explore differences in certain strengths between men and women, and discover why our senses sometimes mislead us through optical illusions and perceptual biases.

Designed to be both educational and entertaining, this program invites participants to see their own minds in a new light—leaving them with insights they’ll remember, discuss, and appreciate long after the presentation ends.

Dr. Michael Bentley is a biologist and educator with degrees from King’s College (PA), the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Virginia. A retired faculty member of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, he has also taught at Virginia Tech, National-Louis University in Chicago, and in public schools in Virginia and Philadelphia.

Dr. Bentley is the author of more than two dozen books and book chapters on science and science education, including Connecting Children to Nature, An Educator’s Field Guide, and The Natural Investigator. His career has also included leadership and educational roles at the Science Museum of Western Virginia and the Virginia Museum of Natural History, as well as helping to found the Southwest Virginia Governor’s School and Community High School in Roanoke. He continues to write and remains active in environmental and community advocacy.
