Power Magnetics at High-Frequency Workshop

Power Magnetics at High-Frequency Workshop

PSMA/PELS Sponsor Pre-APEC Power Magnetics at High-Frequency Workshop

Full-day workshop “Power Magnetics @ High Frequency” slated for Saturday, March 16, 2019 addresses technical advancements necessary for power magnetics to meet requirements of higher application frequencies; sell-out expected so early registration encouraged.

The Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) and the IEEE Power Electronics Society (IEEE PELS) are jointly sponsoring the fourth high-frequency magnetics workshop, “Power Magnetics @ High Frequency,” on Saturday, March 16, 2019. The workshop will be conducted on the day before and in the same venue as APEC 2019 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA.

This day-long event will continue the focus on identifying the latest improvements in magnetic materials, coil (winding) design, construction and fabrication, evaluation and characterization techniques and modelling and simulation tools to target the technical expectations and requirements of higher application frequencies. The workshop will address two specific issues of interest: measurement and reporting of data to improve modelling of ac power loss measurements and the thermal performance of power magnetics. The target audiences for this workshop include anyone working to achieve higher power densities, low profile aspect ratio, higher efficiencies and improved thermal performance.

Previous workshops have completely sold out, so individuals interested in attending this year’s event are encouraged to register early.

The workshop will consist of morning (ac power losses) and afternoon (thermal management) technical lecture presentation sessions and a lunchtime interactive technology demonstration session. The two technical presentation sessions will each be followed by a panel with a Q&A period. The keynote speakers are Gerry Hurley of the National University of Ireland, Galway and Dr. Peter Wilson of the University of Bath, United Kingdom. The workshop will conclude with a presentation by Alexander Gerfer of Wurth Elektronik regarding positive trends with power magnetics. The technology demonstrations will also be available prior to the opening session and during the networking session at the end of the day’s events.

Ed Herbert, PSMA Magnetics Committee co-chair said, “With the move toward higher switching speeds driven by advances in SiC, GaN and Silicon switching devices, magnetics are playing an ever-increasing role in the ultimate performance of power conversion topologies. The popularity of our previous workshops simply underscores the importance of this topic.”

The latest information on the agenda as well as registration information for the workshop is available on the PSMA website at:
