The drum is a sacred instrument that invokes the heart and speaks a universal language. It invites us to travel more deeply into our hearts and to the universal beat that connects all life. The rhythmic heartbeat of the drum is at the center of ceremonies held by people all over the world. The shamanic drum is used to communicate with the Spirit and to connect our hearts with the heartbeat of the Earth. It is a powerful medicine that heals the body, heart, mind, and spirit.
We will be making one-sided hand drums, using wooden frames made of maple and elk, deer or buffalo hide, and sinew. There is an option to dye your drum hide with Indigo plant dye.
16" Deer or Elk Drum: $380
16" Buffalo Drum: $395
18" Deer or Elk Drum: $400
18" Buffalo Drum: $415

Shola is dedicated to peace and understanding by nurturing community building through education, service and the healing arts. She is a ceremonialist and sacred artisan who shares ancient folk songs, painting, weaving, instrument making, jewelry making, botanical gardening, leather work and beadwork. She is the co-founder of the Sacred Arts Research Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides educational programs that support the preservation of arts traditions from around the world. Shola is the director of the Sacred Song School and a facilitator at the Golden Drum, a cultural community center for consciousness and spiritual discipline. She is a member of the Dream Seed shamanic sound healing collective. She is also a co-producer of an international festival called, The Heart & Mind Festival which brings together wisdom keepers, spiritual elders, scientists, youth leader and visionary humans from all paths of life. She has spent 15 years studying with her teacher Maestro Manuel Rufino, in an effort to weave together a global support network and international community that embraces the transcendental path of wisdom, love, truth and knowledge of the eternal soul.
Like the voice, the shamanic drum is one of the world's oldest instruments and it remains incredibly relevant and important. The drum has been used by thousands of ancient indigenous cultures worldwide to heal sickness, connect with the spirit world, pray, bring community together, tell stories, and more. It is incredibly simple yet amazingly diverse in its many expressions. We will be covering traditional uses of the drum and how to work with it in a ceremonial healing context. We also will embark on creating our own animal hide drums by hand in a drum making ceremony.
The creation of the drum is a prayer and a ceremony in itself. We will work with our drums as a visioning meditation for our lives and our paths, so that our thoughts and intentions remain in a high vibration as we create the drums and through that process they become part of the drums. Making your own personal drum is a sacred journey and the power of making something like this with your own hands is incredible, it becomes an extension of your own heart & mind.
"The drum is a Ph*rm*cy" -Maestro Manuel, Taino Elder
