When a Colleague Dies: Growing Through Tragedy with Dr. Michael Myers, MD

Although coming to terms with death and dying is part of our work as physicians, it is not uncommon for us to have considerable difficulty with the subject, especially when we are in training and when we lose one of our own. Dr. Myers will discuss the ways in which physicians typically react and cope with the death of a colleague and explain the underlying biological, psychological, socio-cultural and spiritual mechanisms that we use. Despite the disequilibrium, pain and heartache of loss, it is possible to grow and mature through such tragedy.

OBJECTIVES

List common emotional reactions and behavioral changes that may follow the death of a colleague.

Explain the psychological process of "meaning-taking".

Delineate the ways in which individuals not only survive tragedy but gain strength, empathy and wisdom.
