PD Workshop: The Teachability Factor - developed by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D
The teachability factor refers to the determinants of learning that are psychological in nature: developmental, relational, motivational and emotional. It is the most overlooked, least understood, and potentially most promising of the factors in the learning equation.
Teaching doesn't always result in learning and this discrepency seems to be widening, making the teacher's job much more difficult than it used to be or needs to be. According to Dr. Gordon Neufeld, the problem is not with our teaching but with the diminishing teachability of our students.
What are the developmental factors that come together to make a child teachable? How can we support students who come to school ready to learn so that their passion is not extinguished? Where are the teacher’s access points with students who come to school not-so-ready?
In this session, we welcome Lorraine Beaudry, who will present an overview of ‘The Teachability Factor’, developed by Dr. Neufeld for teachers, administrators and supporting professionals. It is an insight approach that brings attachment-based developmental science to bear on the issues and challenges of educating our young.
In light of this, there are no lists of remedies. The hope is that that when faced with student challenges, adults will move from the brain to the eyes. Rather than ask ‘What do I do?’ we will ask ‘What do I see?’
