This paper examines three unexplored religious aspects of the Hercules-Cacus myth from Book 8 of the Aeneid. I begin by showing how Evander alludes to the Ennian contest of auguries in recounting the combat between Hercules and Cacus, using the latter to tell a modified version of the battle between Romulus and Remus. Next, I highlight how Hercules’ triumph over Cacus imitates and enacts a first sacrifice, and so I will propose that the battle offers an aetiology not only for a religious monument, the Ara Maxima, but also for the activity performed at it and other altars in Rome: animal sacrifice. Finally, I suggest that Evander’s description of the defeated Cacus refers to Hercules’ alleged blinding of Appius Claudius Caecus in 312 BCE. I ultimately argue that Evander’s telling of Hercules’ battle with Cacus casts the myth as a fight more broadly for the shape of Rome’s sacred topography and the form of Rome’s earliest religious activities.
