Upper Egypt Quest: Sohag
In our quest to discover our Egyptian legacy that flourished along the Upper Egypt, we will have our stop in Sohag the hometown of our King Ramses II. Sohag is blessed with the Nile & unbeatable temples, however still out of the sight of Many of us and our duty to change that in coordination with Terous, who is actively exerting extensive efforts to build sustainable development project in Sohag. Join us this Feb. in putting Sohag in Egypt Tourism map and be part of the Change wheel.
Please note the trip is mainly cultural & sightseeing to get us to know the real Egypt.
Day 1 : Meet @ 4:00 am to hit our way to Sohag by 4:30 sharp, arrive to Sohag by afternoon. Check in our Nile Cruise where we will have our accommodation for the coming 2 nights. Have our brunch and start our quest by visiting The National Museum of Sohag that will give you proper orientation of the history of the ancient cities of Sohag, Abydos and Akhmim, home of one of Egypt’s greatest kings, Ramses II.
Then we will visit the historic Mosque of العارف بالله that dated back to the 18th century and was renovated in time of Gamal Abdel Nassar. Later we can enjoy a free time discovering spice markets. Dinner in cruise.
Day 2 :
Breakfast in the cruise, and we will start our day in a Nile boating trip to Flowers Island, have our tea and enjoy the lovely view. Then we will head directly to Abydos Temple, one of the most important religious sites to ancient Egyptians. It is like a pilgrimage as at least once in their lifetime, ancient Egyptians would have hopes to visit Abydos, which for them was strongly associated with the entrance into the afterlife, the largest and most significant temple is the Temple of Seti I. Northwest of Seti I’s temple, there is the smaller, roofless temple that was built by his son King Ramses II (1279–1213 BC). Dinner in the cruise
Rise early for the breakfast in the cruise, then we will head to Red Monastery that can bear comparison with the beautiful Byzantine churches in Turkey and southern Italy, it is a fifth century Coptic Monastery that has recently been restored. The sanctuary is painted in an awe-inspiring collage of colors and professionally lit.
Then we will head to Akhmim, the ruins of the ancient town of Ipu the capital of the 9th Upper Egyptian dynasty, dedicated to the fertility god Min. It was once home to an immense temple complex, supposedly larger than the complex of Amun at Karnak.
While Sohag is one of Egypt’s oldest cities, it is famous for its textile industry, we will visit one of the oldest textile shops for handmade scarfs. That will be our last stop in Sohag and we will head back to Cairo.
