The Portrait Made Easy workshop by Myriam Abdelaziz


We are delighted to have the opportunity to host the French/Egyptian photographer Myriam Abdelaziz in a very new educational experience about portrait photography.

This workshop will teach you how to approach portrait making in an easy way. You will learn how to take a great portrait in less than 10 minutes using available light and setting.

You will be able to produce strong images of total strangers met on the street as part of documentary work but also of friends and family.

The classes will alternate the theoretical and technical aspects as well as the hands on portraiture experience.

Pre- workshop requirements: Students will be asked to bring to class:
1) A working digital camera with it’s battery, charger, memory card and card reader
2) As many portraits they shot themselves in the past on a USB card (medium resolution)
3) Ideas of portrait or people they want to photograph.

Day 1:

10 am: Introduction
- Student introduce themselves and portrait ideas they have in mind as well as explain why they joined this workshop and what they are expecting to get out form it
- Teacher introduces herself and show some of her work

11.15 am: Break

11.30 am:
- Download of images brought by the students

- Slideshow

- Discussion

1pm: Lunch break

2 pm: Look at renowned portraiture photographer’s work who have produced strong and iconic portraits (5 Photographers to be announced)
- Discussion

3.15pm: Break

3.30pm:
- Mini Field trip: students are sent to produce a minimum of one portrait that they will have to present the next day

4.30 pm
- Back at Photopia
- Discuss main issues faced

Day 2:

- Download of images brought by the students

- Slideshow

- Discussion

11.15 am: Break

11.30am:
- Technical and theoretical tips
(How to better chose a background, how to use the available light at your advantage, how to make your subject comfortable, what is a good lenses to use, what setting should you set your camera on)

1pm: Lunch break

2pm:
- Mini Field trip: students are sent to produce a minimum of one portrait that they will present the same day

3.15pm:

- Back at Photopia
- Download of images brought by the students
- Slideshow
- Discussion

4.30 pm
- General Q and A

5pm end

Biography:

Myriam Abdelaziz is a French photographer of Egyptian origins and born in Cairo. In 2005, she decided to pursue a career in photography and graduated from the International Center of Photography in New York in 2006. Myriam’s work tells stories of its participants. Her inquiry into the stories of people takes her around the globe searching for stories that overcome physical and cultural barriers and often reveal what we have in common: glimpses of solitude, hope, insecurity, dignity. Her work
captures moments where something inner is revealed.

She has been published in prestigious magazines such as Newsweek, Time Magazine, Courrier International and Eyemazing among many others as well as featured in various solo and group exhibitions in Europe, the Middle East and the USA.She is mainly working on stories in the Middle East and Africa.
