About Fairville
Fairville Facing Inequalities and democratic challenges through Co-production in Cities
Fairville is an international collaborative research project funded by Horizon Europe (2023–2026). The project examines entrenched urban inequalities and their implications for democracy in large cities, focusing on low-income neighborhoods increasingly disconnected from representative institutions.
In Fairville, co-production refers to bottom-up collaborative processes engaging four key partners: civil society organisations and residents, researchers, third-party facilitators or advocacy groups, and local authorities. These initiatives, often rooted in citizen mobilizations, address urgent issues in three areas: environmental sustainability, risk management, and access to adequate housing, while also promoting respect for citizens’ fundamental rights amid democratic decline.
The project employs participatory action research and knowledge co-production as strategies of spatial justice. Research is conducted through eight Fairville Labs in Europe and Africa — Athens, Berlin, Brussels, Cairo, Călărași, Dakar, London, and Marseille — where citizen-led initiatives are supported and analyzed to assess co-production’s potential to reduce inequalities and democratic gaps.
