El pianista, cantante, multi-instrumentista, escritor y productor nació en 1975 en La Habana en el seno de una familia de artistas cubanos.

El artista prodigioso apareció por primera vez en el escenario a los 15 años durante el Festival de Jazz de La Habana, un festival que tomó bajo su dirección artística 26 años más tarde (sucediendo al gran músico Chucho Valdés).

Su explosivo álbum Yo, que reunió a quince músicos de Cuba, África y EE. UU., fue nominado a los Premios Grammy en 2012; su sucesor, 7 Rayos, lanzado ese mismo año, fusionó de manera brillante sonidos cubanos, música clásica, instrumentos de África Occidental, música electrónica y poesía hablada. El álbum retrospectivo ABUC encontró el cruce entre pasado y futuro, sumergiéndose nuevamente en el legado de la música cubana con audacia y frescura contemporánea. En 2019, colaboró con Ibrahim Maalouf y la estrella emergente del rap cubano Danay Suárez en el álbum Yesun.
