En quinze ans, James Brandon Lewis a confirmé tout ce que le grand Sonny Rollins a très tôt vu en lui : un saxophoniste ténor véloce et inventif, les pieds solidement ancrés dans l’histoire du jazz contemporain et le regard tourné vers de nouveaux cheminements. Habitué de Sons d’hiver, où il a joué en duo, en trio mais aussi au sein de différents projets collectifs, James Brandon Lewis revient aujourd’hui à la formule qui lui va sans doute le mieux, celle d’un quartet “classique” de haut vol, avec lequel il a déjà enregistré cinq albums. Le dernier en date, paru au printemps 2025 et joliment titré Abstraction is Deliverance, ralentit les tempi pour un moment de grande classe. Sur scène, le groupe est toujours sur la brèche, au rythme des puissantes improvisations free de son leader.

EN // In fifteen years, James Brandon Lewis has fulfilled all of the promise the great Sonny Rollins saw in him. He is a lightning-quick and inventive tenor man, with his feet firmly planted in the history of contemporary jazz and his gaze focused on new directions to pioneer. A frequent guest of the Sons d’hiver festival, he has performed in duos, trios, and also as part of larger collective projects. On this night, though, he returns to the formation that suits him best: the “classic” quartet, backed up by piano, bass, and drum manned by stellar musicians. Their fifth album together, released in spring of 2025, was beautifully entitled Abstraction Is Deliverance. It slowed the tempi to a luscious and classy roll. Live, the quartet is always a thrill, as players stand toe-to-toe, matching their leader’s powerful improvisations.

Légende vivante et figure historique de l’Art Ensemble of Chicago, qu’il a continuellement irrigué de ses recherches sur les musiques afro-caribéennes, Famoudou Don Moye est un familier du festival. Pour cette création exclusive, le batteur américain réunit un ensemble tout en percussions et cuivres et embarque pour un voyage sur les traces des musiques traditionnelles africaines, telles qu’il les a fréquentées toute sa vie au fil de nombreux séjours au Maroc, au Libéria, en Guinée ou au Sénégal mais aussi telles que les diasporas les transmettent. Inlassable passeur, Famoudou Don Moye partage aujourd’hui son temps entre les workshops qu’il propose à des musiciens, ses recherches personnelles, son jardin à Marseille et des concerts aussi rares qu’immanquables.

EN // A living legend and pillar of the brilliant Art Ensemble of Chicago, nourished by his research into Afro-Caribbean music, Famoudou Don Moye is an old friend of the festival. For this world premiere, the Rochester-born maestro brings together a percussion-and-brass orchestra to embark on a journey through time and travails to traditional African music. All his life, he has surrounded himself with these sounds, frequently traveling to Morocco, Liberia, Guinea, and Senegal, as well as listening closely to their echos in the diasporas. A tireless guide, Famoudou Don Moye now divides his time between workshops offered to musicians, personal research, his garden in Marseille, and a few rare concerts – events that are not to be missed.
