This Christmas, step into the heart of Buxton for a series of special events celebrating local music, drama, crafts and more. From festive performances to hands-on activities, each event invites you to take part, watch or simply listen, everyone is welcome.
Events are completely free, and suitable for all ages. Along the way, you’ll find opportunities to purchase refreshments and gifts, but there’s absolutely no obligation to do so.
Each participating building or shop has a unique story to share. As you explore, discover Buxton’s heritage through windows that come alive with creativity and community spirit.
Please note: some venues may be small or have steps. We’re working to make events as accessible as possible, and volunteers will be on hand to assist.
Sketch at Scrivener’s - Sketch a spooky Winter’s Tale about the bookshop ghost.
Scrivener’s is a five-storey treasure trove for book lovers, known for its labyrinthine layout, cosy reading nooks, and eclectic stock of second-hand and antiquarian books. Housed in a Victorian building that once served as a printer’s and stationer’s, the shop retains its original features, making it one of the most atmospheric bookshops in the region. It’s also famously home to a resident ghost, whose mysterious presence has inspired local lore and literary imagination.
As part of the Through the Shop Window programme, Scrivener’s presents 'Sketch at Scrivener’s', a creative, bookish experience where participants are invited to sketch a spooky Winter’s Tale about the bookshop ghost. This imaginative session blends storytelling with visual art, encouraging visitors to explore the shop’s haunting charm through pencil and paper.
