- **Event Name**: Rethinking Snakebite: The Science Behind First Aid and Antivenom- Professor Geoff Isbister AM
- **Event Start and End Date**: Wed, 26 Aug, 2026 at 07:00 pm
- **Event Description**: The Australian Herpetological Society is delighted to announce that our guest speaker for Wednesday 26 August will be Professor Geoff Isbister AM, one of Australia’s foremost authorities on snakebite and clinical toxinology.

Professor Isbister is an emergency physician, clinical toxicologist and Professor at the University of Newcastle. He is the founder and leader of the Australian Snakebite Project, Australia’s largest and most influential snakebite research program. His pioneering work has transformed our understanding of snakebite first aid, venom effects and the use of antivenom, with his research changing clinical practice not only across Australia but internationally. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to medicine and clinical toxicology, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

Much of his research challenges long held views about the treatment of envenomed patients, including whether antivenom works. He has made clinicians re-look at what evidence there is for various treatments and why we use these treatments, which has made him unpopular in some camps.

Snakebite remains one of Australia’s most fascinating—and misunderstood—medical emergencies. Whether you’re a reptile enthusiast, wildlife carer, researcher, medical professional or simply interested in Australia’s remarkable snakes, this promises to be a fascinating evening with one of the world’s leading experts in the field.

Date: Wednesday 26 August
Venue: Woodstock Community Centre, 22 Church Street, Burwood
Time: Doors open at 7:00 pm for a 7:30 pm start.

Everyone is welcome. If you’ve ever wanted to hear the latest evidence on Australian snakebite, antivenom and where the science is heading, this is a talk you won’t want to miss.
