Drawing on the legacy of eminent writer, scholar and folklorist Dr June Factor AM (1936–2024) and contemporary Deakin University research, teaching and learning in play therapy and early childhood education, the exhibition invites audiences into the middle primary school years to relive a little of their childhood and to ask the question: why do we play?Opening Event SpeakersWe are delighted to welcome the following speakers:Dr Gwenda Davey AM – Eminent folklore researcher, children’s activist, and former teacher, lecturer and counsellor in child development and psychologyJudy McKinty – Independent children’s play researcher (Master of Cultural Heritage, Deakin University)Ian Rogers OAM – Representing the family of Dr June FactorDr Virginie Rey - Senior Research Fellow and June Factor Scholarship FounderWe warmly welcome students, staff and members of the broader community to celebrate this vibrant and engaging exhibition over afternoon tea.We look forward to seeing you there!Experience PLAYAt its heart, PLAY foregrounds play for plays sake, while also reflecting on how it has evolved across generations and continues to shape learning and wellbeing today. Visitors are encouraged to pause, participate, and rediscover the simple pleasure of play.From historic children’s books in Deakin Library Special Collections to material from June Factor’s Folk Toy Collection and current research in early childhood and play therapy, the exhibition highlights play as both joy and learning, nostalgia and discovery.
