What is Mizuhiki?

Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese paper craft with a history dating back over 1,200 years. It has been used to decorate gifts and envelopes for special occasions such as births, weddings, celebrations of longevity, and seasonal festivals

The Significance of Mizuhiki

Mizuhiki is more than just a beautiful craft; it also carries symbolic meanings of connection, honour, and purity, with each knot having its own meaning.

About the Instructor

Sachie Murakami

Despite knowing of Mizuhiki in my years growing up in Japan, I think as a whole, we do not appreciate nor fully understand its meaning. As time goes by, we start to forget why certain things were created for it’s use and purpose. I found out the significance of this meaning recently, and I wish to share it with others. And I hope that Mizuhiki will continue to be passed down for many years to come as one of the traditional cultures that was infused with various meanings and wishes by ancient people.
