ABOUT THIS MONTH'S LECTURE:
250 years ago this month, Abigail Adams wrote to her husband John Adams at the Continental Congress, “I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors.” Unfortunately, women were not given the same rights nor respect then, nor in our annals of history. One such woman who was not remembered was Martha Winslow Powell. Martha tied with her husband and son for the first American settlers in Burlington, Vermont; and when Martha and her husband sold this land, they wrote the first land deed that recognized the new independent State of Vermont. Martha served the Patriot cause in the Revolution and suffered violently for it. So why did it take over a year for researchers to even just find her first name? This presentation will not only tell Martha’s story – for the first time to a public audience – but also discuss the challenges and rewards of researching women in history.
