GEORGIA, The Causcasus
Limited Entries. ultramarathon
August 15th to 21st.
RacingThePlanet: Georgia 2020, The Caucasus, is the 12th edition of the RacingThePlanet Ultramarathon. It will take place in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia, at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. The host town, Tbilisi, the picturesque capital of Georgia, is a short flight from most European cities.
Georgia (Georgian: საქართველო, Sakartvelo) is also known as the Gem of the Caucasus. It is sandwiched between Russia to the north, Turkey and Armenia to the south, Azerbaijan to the southeast, and sits along the coast of the Black Sea.
A mountainous country, Georgia is home to some of Europe’s highest mountain peaks. Despite its modest size, the country has a huge mix of other landscapes and micro-climates, ranging from dry wine-growing valleys and dry arid desert areas in the east, to lush vegetation, caves, canyons and bamboo forests when you near the coast of the Black Sea in the west.
The total distance of the course is approximately 250 kilometers / 155 miles. The approximate distances per stage can be seen below:
Date Kilometers / Miles
Stage 1 15 August 40 km / 25 miles
Stage 2 16 August 40 km / 25 miles
Stage 3 17 August 40 km / 25 miles
Stage 4 18 August 40 km / 25 miles
Stage 5 19 & 20August 80 km / 50 miles
Stage 6 21 August 10 km / 5 miles
Georgia is a country of hills and mountains so the course has some elevation and hills, but there is no technical climbing involved. The majority of the course is at an elevation of 1,000 to 2,000 meters / 3,300 6,600 feet but there are some sections that are approximately 3,000 meters / 10,000 feet.
A cut-off time is the time by which you must have left a checkpoint.
There are cut-off times for every checkpoint on the course - these are announced in the morning briefing before the start of each Stage. The cut-off times are designed to help you finish, not to stop you from finishing the race.
While the leaders are extremely fast (finishing 40 kilometers / 26 miles in 3-4 hours) the cut-off times for the back of the field are based on a 4 km per hour / 2.5 miles per hour walking speed. This means completing a 40 kilometer / 26 mile stage in 10 hours.
Cut-off times for The Long March are based on a similar speed but with additional time allowed for a rest at the Overnight Checkpoint.
