The Bullhead City Police and Fire Departments will host the annual Walk Away from Drugs and 5K Run on Wednesday, October 22, in recognition of Red Ribbon Week, the nation’s largest and oldest drug-prevention campaign.
“This event is about more than just walking or running, it’s about uniting together as a community and taking a visual stance against drugs to promote healthy, drug-free lifestyles,” said Community Services Officer Lorrie Duggins. “We encourage everyone to wear red and carry signs or banners to show your commitment to a drug-free community.”
The event begins at Ken Fovargue Park, 2255 Trane Road. Participants are encouraged to gather at 4 p.m. for family-friendly games and to visit public safety information tables. The 5K run will begin at 5 p.m., followed immediately by the community walk. The event is free, and no pre-registration is required. Medals will be awarded to the first-place male, female, and youth (under 18) 5K runners.
5K Route (3.1 miles): Ken Fovargue Park → Trane Rd → Marina Blvd → Lakeside Dr → Hancock Rd → Hwy 95 → Marina Blvd → Trane Rd → return to Ken Fovargue Park.
Walk Route (1.5 miles): Ken Fovargue Park → Trane Rd → Marina Blvd → Highland Rd → Hancock Rd → Trane Rd → return to Ken Fovargue Park.
Swire Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Kingman will provide water, drinks and fun games for all.
The Walk Away from Drugs and 5K Run continues a tradition of community partnerships and support for a drug-free Bullhead City.
Red Ribbon Week began in 1985 in honor of DEA agent Kiki Camarena, who was killed by drug traffickers in Mexico City. The red ribbon has since become a powerful symbol of the commitment to live drug-free.
