The sea and the myths it has inspired across cultures and centuries are brought together in The Dark Water Keeps Our Names, an exhibition by London-based curator Alejandra Sanchez Mack featuring the work of Romanian artist Laura Partin.

The collection is part of the artist’s ongoing body of work Mar Adentro, in which mythological figures from different parts of the world are reimagined through her distinctive contemporary drawing practice. Some are reinterpreted through a feminist lens, challenging traditional portrayals that have cast these figures as dangerous, weak, or responsible for male misfortune, and reframing them with renewed agency – including Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, born from the sea, reimagined here as a warrior; the Camenae, Roman nymphs whose voices carried poetry, healing, and wisdom; the Siren, originally the bird-women of Greek myth, is rethought as a figure of knowledge and voice rather than seduction or deception, whose song carries truths denied to women and refuses to take blame for others’ weakness; and Toyotama-hime, the Japanese sea princess whose tragic love story is reinterpreted from her perspective, reclaiming the emotional complexity of a myth long told through the eyes of others.

These mythological creatures are embedded within the collection as characters witnessing a constantly changing world where climate change, pollution, and environmental degradation continue to threaten aquatic biodiversity. The art of storytelling, particularly through myth, is a dying practice. There is little room for it in our fast-paced overstimulated world, one that exploits natural resources to sustain increasingly synthetic ways of living. However, the exhibition does not seek to make us feel guilty for what has been lost. While many of the ongoing changes may now be irreversible, awareness is the first step in pushing back, redirecting attention toward recovering a sense of safety and creative freedom shaped by ancestral relationships with the sea and the myths it inspired.

The exhibition will open on July 8, 2026 at Gallery 15 DESIGN, an art gallery of the Union of Visual Artists from Romania, located in the Old Town of Bucharest at Hanul cu Tei, 63 Lipscani. Following the opening, the exhibition will remain on view until August 8, 2026, and will be open Thursday through Sunday, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Marea și miturile pe care le-a inspirat de-a lungul secolelor și în diferite culturi se reunesc în The Dark Water Keeps Our Names, o expoziție curatoriată de Alejandra Sanchez Mack, curatoare stabilită la Londra, ce prezintă lucrările artistei române Laura Partin.

Selecția de lucrări face parte din seria artistică în desfășurare Mar Adentro, în cadrul căreia figuri mitologice din diverse colțuri ale lumii sunt reinterpretate prin practica distinctivă de desen contemporan a artistei. Unele dintre acestea sunt abordate dintr-o perspectivă feministă, contestând reprezentările feminine tradiționale care le-au prezentat drept periculoase, slabe sau responsabile pentru necazurile bărbaților și redându-le autonomia și forța. Printre acestea se numără Afrodita, zeița greacă a iubirii și frumuseții, născută din mare, reimaginată ca o războinică; Camenele, nimfele romane ale căror glasuri evocau poezia, vindecarea și înțelepciunea; Sirena, inițial femeie-pasăre în mitologia greacă, reinterpretată ca simbol al cunoașterii și al propriei voci, al cărei cântec transmite adevăruri refuzate femeilor și refuză să mai poarte vina pentru slăbiciunile altora; precum și Toyotama-hime, prințesa mării din mitologia japoneză, a cărei tragică poveste de dragoste este spusă din perspectiva ei, recuperând complexitatea emoțională a unui mit relatat, prea mult timp, prin ochii celorlalți.

Aceste personaje mitologice sunt integrate în serie ca martori ai unei lumi aflate într-o continuă transformare, în care schimbările climatice, poluarea și degradarea mediului amenință tot mai mult biodiversitatea acvatică. Arta povestirii, în special prin intermediul miturilor, este o practică aflată în declin. Într-o lume alertă și suprastimulată, care exploatează resursele naturale pentru a susține moduri de viață tot mai artificiale, rămâne tot mai puțin spațiu pentru astfel de narațiuni.

Cu toate acestea, expoziția nu își propune să provoace un sentiment de vinovăție pentru ceea ce s-a pierdut. Deși multe dintre schimbările în curs pot fi acum ireversibile, conștientizarea reprezintă primul pas în procesul de schimbare, redirecționând atenția către recuperarea unui sentiment de siguranță și libertate creativă, modelat de relația ancestrală dintre oameni, mare și miturile pe care aceasta le-a inspirat.

Expoziția va fi deschisă publicului începând cu 8 iulie 2026, ora 18:00 la Galeria 15 Design, un spațiu al Uniunii Artiștilor Plastici din România, situat în centrul vechi al Bucureștiului, la Hanul cu Tei, Strada Lipscani nr. 63. Ulterior expoziția va fi deschisă până pe 8 august 2026, de joi până duminică, între orele 16:00 și 20:00.
