LIARS is the project of Australian composer, producer and performer Angus Andrew. Across ten albums, it has become one of contemporary music’s most singular voices, with each release developing its own musical and conceptual logic. Composition, field recording and improvisation all enter Andrew’s process as he takes apart the familiar architecture of a song to see what else it can hold. For The Apple Drop (2021), collaboration began at the outset, with avant-garde jazz drummer Laurence Pike, multi-instrumentalist Cameron Deyell and lyricist Mary Pearson Andrew. The album marked a departure from the solitary method of TFCF, pursuing, in Andrew’s words, “something bigger than myself.” His work outside Liars includes Beck’s Record Club and a vocal appearance on Xiu Xiu’s Oh No. Live, he is joined by an ensemble, leaving room for improvisation rather than reproducing the recordings note for note.
