The Curious Savage is a heartwarming comedy by John Patrick, first performed in 1950. The play skillfully blends humor and tenderness while exploring themes of kindness, greed, and what it truly means to be “sane.” Through witty dialogue and humorous situations, it delivers a meaningful message about human nature. The story centers on Mrs. Ethel Savage, a wealthy widow whose selfish stepchildren commit her to The Cloisters sanitarium after she chooses to use her fortune to establish a memorial fund dedicated to fulfilling people’s dreams. With the help of the gentle and compassionate patients she meets there, Mrs. Savage ultimately outwits her greedy stepchildren and reaffirms the value of generosity and love over wealth.
