——— ROCKET (US)
Rocket have had a busy few years. The Los Angeles crew, friends since childhood, formed in 2021 in an unmarked shed to tape their debut EP. Though it was their first real attempt at being a “band,” Alithea Tuttle on vocals and bass, Baron Rinzler on guitar, Cooper Ladomade on drums and Desi Scaglione on guitar arrived fully formed with combustible, airtight songs.
R is for Rocket, their remarkable debut album, is a joyride through gloriously loud, anthemic, bombastic and beautiful terrain. Tracks like “One Million,” “Wide Awake,” “Crossing Fingers” and “The Choice” balance thick blasts of guitars and driving rhythms with Tuttle’s hypnotic vocals. Echoing nineties guitar icons Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, Rocket reshape those touchstones into something uniquely their own, cementing their reputation as one of the most promising guitar-forward bands of their generation.
The album builds on the energy of their Versions of You EP but expands it massively. By early 2024, after relentless touring with Ride, Sunny Day Real Estate and Silversun Pickups, Rocket returned to the studio sharper than ever. Time on the road allowed them to refine songs before recording, reworking several tracks for maximum impact. With Scaglione producing, they split sessions between Foo Fighters’ Studio 606 for thunderous drums and 64 Sound for more intimate textures, experimenting with amps, double tracked drums, and new flourishes of piano, organ and mellotron.
Lyrically, Tuttle leaned into relationships both romantic and personal. Songs like “One Million” and “Crossing Fingers” wrestle with longing and fear, while “Number One Fan” is unabashedly a love song. After finishing the record she realized it is all about relationships, good or bad, romantic or not, and how they shape us.
Ultimately it is the band’s own bond that fuels everything. “We all have a very deep understanding of each other,” says Scaglione. “With being best friends comes an insane amount of trust creatively and personally. The fact that we get to make music and share all of this together is truly special.”
