Terwijl de media hun pennen scherpen in aanloop naar de première, buigen John en Diane zich over POWER. Diane zegde toe voor het project omdat ze het belangrijk vindt om het over machtsverhoudingen binnen de podiumsector te hebben. Zij is jong, onstuimig en wil vooral ‘iets’ voelen, de vloer op, spelen! Tegenover haar branie hapert John. Hij beredeneert, reflecteert, blokkeert, …
Met twee staan ze op scène, met tussen hen in een generatiekloof, een verschil in afkomst en opleiding en de machtsverhouding tussen een gevallen ster en een aanstormend talent. Waarom doen ze wat ze doen? Wanneer en in welke mate zijn de grenzen eigenlijk verschoven? En wat betekent dat vandaag hen? Voor het theater?
Voor POWERPLAY zit Valentijn Dhaenens voor het eerst in de regiestoel. Hij boorde voor de tekst zijn jarenlange ervaring in het Vlaamse podiumlandschap aan en peilde bij acteurs Bruno Vanden Broecke en Andie Dushime naar hun persoonlijke ondervindingen. Samen onderzoeken ze: is het theater een mijnenveld geworden onder invloed van maatschappelijke gevoeligheden? En kan theater nog wel bestaan binnen deze omstandigheden?

Tandis que les médias affûtent leurs stylos à l’approche de la première, John et Diana travaillent sur POWER. Diana s’est engagée dans le projet parce qu’elle estime important de parler des relations de pouvoir dans les arts du spectacle. Elle est jeune, fougueuse et veut avant tout « ressentir quelque chose », être sur scène, jouer ! Face à son assurance, John hésite. Il raisonne, réfléchit, bloque...
Sur scène, ils sont deux, séparés par un fossé générationnel, des origines et une éducation différentes, et par le rapport de force entre une star déchue et un talent émergent. Pourquoi sont-ils là ? Quand et dans quelle mesure les frontières se sont-elles déplacées ? Et qu’est-ce que cela signifie pour eux aujourd’hui ? Pour le théâtre ?
Dans POWERPLAY, Valentijn Dhaenens passe pour la première fois derrière la caméra en tant que metteur en scène. Il puise dans ses années d’expérience sur la scène flamande et s’appuie sur les témoignages des acteurs Bruno Vanden Broecke et Andie Dushime et sur leurs expériences personnelles. Le théâtre est-il devenu un champ de mines sous l’influence des sensibilités sociales, ou ces sensibilités garantissent-elles simplement une plus grande diversité sur nos scènes ? Et le théâtre peut-il encore exister dans ces circonstances, ou cette évolution est-elle justement nécessaire pour assurer son avenir ?

As the media sharpen their pencils in the run-up to the premiere, John and Diana try to tackle POWER. The two of them stand on stage. There’s evidently a gaping generational divide between them, a difference in background, education and power. Why do they do what they do? When, and to what extent, have boundaries really been crossed? And what does that mean for them today – and for the theatre?
POWERPLAY is Valentijn Dhaenens’ first venture into directing. He based his text on years of experience in the Flemish performing arts scene, and asked actors Bruno Vanden Broecke and Andie Dushime about their personal experiences. Together they wonder: has the theatre become a mine field under the influence of societal sensitivities, or do they actually allow for more diversity on our stages? And can theatre still exist within these circumstances, or is this evolution in fact essential to guarantee its continued existence?
