Dutch songwriter and composer Pitou releases her new single Too Good To Go this Friday, a wonderfully scattershot song brimming with mania, mischief and cacophony, in the vein of Björk, Meredith Monk, Jockstrap and, especially rhythmically, Orchestra Baobab.

“Too Good To Go unfolds in the aftermath of a profound grief or loss,” Pitou says. “The moment you first realize that sadness no longer dominates and there's room for joy again. That feeling of 'I'm still here! There's light at the end of the tunnel!' can feel incredibly euphoric at that specific moment. You want to hold on to that moment as long as possible, while simultaneously knowing there's still a lot of processing to be done.” She adds, “I've discovered a whole new side to my own songwriting. My previous album, Big Tear, was kind of like a cathedral I built. A place of silence where I could search for answers, and make room for sadness. But I consider music such an important figure in my life: to only turn to it with questions or sadness didn't feel entirely right. So it was time to honor its role in my life and make it full by bringing all these other aspects of life—the other emotions, the other sounds—to it as well.”

The track, self-produced by Pitou and mixed by Matthijs Kievit, features her close-knit band M. Alberto on saxophone and woodwinds, Lieke Heusinkveld on keys and woodwinds, Jasja Offermans on bass and Mischa Porte on drums. Its colorful visuals, filmed during a roadtrip in the North of France by Michiel Venmans, show Pitou encountering madness and ultimately finding freedom. Pitou gained acclaim in 2023 with Big Tear, which appeared in end-of-year lists as “One of the most beautiful contemporary indie-pop records of this moment” (Madame Figaro, FR) and “a world class record” (Volkskrant, NL). Her musical background—singing in a classical children’s choir and traveling with her parents, taking home cassette tapes of Malinese, Senegalese and Indian music—shaped her recognizable musical universe, where her signature voice, melodies and chord progressions go hand in hand with intuitive and poetic lyrics.
