How do you describe the drummer, composer and producer Makaya McCraven’s music? It’s jazz, but cut like a hip-hop track. It’s improvisation, but shored up with passages of intelligent composition. It’s spontaneous, but the recordings are the result of cutting, looping and overdubbing in the studio. Ten years after the key album In the Moment, and following the Covid record In These Times, McCraven is back with a new LP on International Anthem. Trumpet player Marquis Hill and bassist Junius Paul can be heard again on this new album, joining McCraven for his first visit to Bozar. Expect the unexpected, because open-ended concerts are where he sees a kaleidoscope of possibilities.
