“I am a lover of blur, soft colors, dreams and poetry on film. My mother taught me to love cameras, film and drawers full of memories. Polaroid allows me to shoot the way I prefer to see. Gypsy, dreamer, ex-superhero, poet wannabe, starter of projects.”

That’s how the late Penny Felts Colbert, founder of The 12:12 Project, explained her love of instant photography.

Penny founded the international instant film artist collective in 2013, at a time when she felt her photography was in a rut and needed a jump start. 

She invited 11 women whose work she admired to join her in a challenge to post an instant photo interpretation of 12 themes, tackling a new one each month.

That went so well that in the second season she formed a second group for men to tackle their own set of themes alongside the original women’s group.

The groups later merged into the current collective of 24 men and women. This exhibition is a celebration of the group’s 10th season 

Each member of the collective also now invites a guest artist to interpret the theme that they proposed for the group, so each season shows the work of 48 instant photographers.

The group also offers a curated feed of instant photos on Instagram from others that demonstrate the creative possibilities  of instant film.
