Chinese American Bear est le duo formé à Seattle par les musiciens Anne Tong et Bryce Barsten. Leur indie pop colorée et onirique est inspirée autant par les harmonies des Beach Boys que par l’excentricité des B-52’s ou des Flaming Lips.
Né pendant la pandémie, le projet prend rapidement forme autour de la voix d’Anne Tong, qui chante en anglais et en chinois. Leurs chansons s’inspirent de souvenirs d’enfance, de la vie quotidienne et de la culture culinaire chinoise — dumplings, nouilles ou boba tea — transformant ces références en une pop joyeuse et chaleureuse qui résonne particulièrement auprès de la diaspora asiatique.

Après un premier album autoédité en 2022, le duo signe chez Moshi Moshi et sort Wah!!! en 2024. Leur nouvel album Dim Sum & Then Some poursuit cette exploration entre pop, synthés, disco et psychédélisme léger. Sur scène, Chinese American Bear transforme cet univers en concert festif et décalé, où imagination et énergie collective sont au rendez-vous.

Chinese American Bear is het duo dat in Seattle is opgericht door de muzikanten Anne Tong en Bryce Barsten. Hun kleurrijke en dromerige indiepop is evenzeer geïnspireerd door de harmonieën van de Beach Boys als door de excentriciteit van de B-52’s of de Flaming Lips. Het project, dat tijdens de pandemie het levenslicht zag, kreeg al snel vorm rond de stem van Anne Tong, die zowel in het Engels als het Chinees zingt. Hun nummers zijn geïnspireerd door jeugdherinneringen, het dagelijks leven en de Chinese eetcultuur – dumplings, noedels of boba tea – en zetten deze verwijzingen om in vrolijke en hartelijke pop die vooral bij de Aziatische diaspora in de smaak valt.

Na een eerste, in eigen beheer uitgebracht album in 2022 tekende het duo bij Moshi Moshi en bracht het in 2024 ‘Wah!!!’ uit. Hun nieuwe album ‘Dim Sum & Then Some’ zet deze verkenning tussen pop, synths, disco en lichte psychedelica voort. Op het podium zet Chinese American Bear dit universum om in een feestelijk en eigenzinnig concert, waar verbeelding en collectieve energie centraal staan.
