Sous le pseudonyme énigmatique de Cautious Clay se cache Joshua Karpeh, musicien multi-instrumentiste originaire de Cleveland et installé à Brooklyn. À la croisée du r&b alternatif, de la soul éthérée et d'une pop introspective, cet artiste insaisissable tisse une musique profondément personnelle, souvent comparée à celle de James Blake, Frank Ocean ou Sufjan Stevens. 

Formé au jazz et au saxophone classique, Cautious Clay est un véritable touche-à-tout : il a écrit et produit pour John Legend, remixé Billie Eilish, et s'est fait sampler par Taylor Swift. Radio France résumait son dernier album KARPEH en ces termes : « le prodige new-yorkais du r&b alternatif plonge dans ses racines jazz et libère ses émotions. » Aux amateurices du genre, ce concert est pour vous.

Het is een gloednieuwe dag voor Cautious Clay – of Joshua Karpeh – en hij gaat er vol tegenaan. De zanger, liedjesschrijver, producer en multi-instrumentalist komt in een stroomversnelling die zich van uur tot uur ontvouwt op zijn nieuwste project ‘The Hours: Morning’, een conceptuele onderneming die zowel een mixtape als een emotioneel tijdschema is. Na zijn verhuis naar Philadelphia na de release van zijn vorige album – het jazzy en autobiografische ‘KARPEH’ – werd de tijd die hij doorbracht in Brooklyn veel kostbaarder en werd ritueel een noodzaak. Karpeh verlegde de grenzen van een vrijgevochten bestaan dat ooit natuurlijk aanvoelde en begon een schema op te stellen dat prioriteit gaf aan tijd buiten de studio waarin hij het grootste deel van het afgelopen decennium doorbracht. De nieuwe grenzen boden een infrastructuur voor gerichte creativiteit en al snel had hij in een jaar tijd meer dan 60 nummers gemaakt.

De acht nummers op ‘The Hours: Morning’ zijn geselecteerd op basis van wat Karpeh associeert met elk uur dat hij wakker is. Lead single ‘No Champagne’ straalt met de warmte van de zonsopgang die door het raam schijnt en werpt licht op harde waarheden in een relatie. ‘The Hours: Morning’ interpreteert het aanbreken van de dag meer als een gesprek dan als iets intens persoonlijks. Gewapend met een zekere popnauwkeurigheid die hij de afgelopen tien jaar heeft bijgeschaafd, is het een project dat Karpeh verder belicht als een artiest wiens kracht in zijn vingervlugheid ligt.
