Join Art Education Victoria for the VisualArts360 workshop led by artist Frances Tapueluelu. Designed to support primary school educators, this professional development session will explore meaningful ways to integrate visual arts and Cross-Curricular Priorities (CCP) into the classroom. Guided by Frances, participants will learn traditional and contemporary Tongan textile techniques and explore how students can engage with First Nations practice in ways that are sensitive to culture and context.
Featured artist: Frances Tapueluelu is a New Zealand-born Tongan, of Vava’u and Nuku’alofa descent. Graduating with a degree in fashion design, Frances worked in the fashion and film industries in New Zealand before migrating to Naarm (Melbourne). She has dedicated time to living and working with remote Indigenous communities. Inspired by early cultural influences and her work with Indigenous communities, Tapueluelu extends her creative practice to include wearable art, print media and spoken word.
What to Expect:
In this hands-on textile workshop and Q&A session, Frances will give an artist talk with her piece currently on show in the Counihan Gallery Love in Crisis exhibition. She will then guide participants through the process of making the floral elements iconic to her work, leaning on traditional Tongan recycling practices.
