- **Event Name**: “The Sounds of 19th Century Afrofuturism”: Prof. Judith Casselberry on 19th Century Black Spirituals
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 07 Feb, 2026 at 02:00 pm – Sat, 07 Feb, 2026 at 05:00 pm
- **Event Description**: On Saturday, February 7th, at 2 p.m. in the First Parish Church Sanctuary, our Adult Christian Education Committee will sponsor a presentation by Dr. Judith Casselberry, “The Sounds of 19th Century Afrofuturism.”

Casselberry is Geoffrey Canada Associate Professor of Africana Studies at Bowdoin College. Her academic focus is on African American religious and cultural studies, and includes an interest in music and spirituality, music and social movements, and Black intellectual thought. She is also a performer. As a vocalist and guitarist, she has enjoyed a career as an international recording artist with Toshi Reagon and Big Lovely, Casselberry-Dupreé, and JUCA, and shared stages with Sweet Honey in the Rock, Odetta, Stevie Wonder, Etta James, and Mavis Staples.

The term Afrofuturism describes a literary and artistic movement that rejects depictions of a future with Black destitution or Black erasure, and creates a dwelling space for creating Black futures from Black perspectives. Casselberry’s presentation will turn back the clock a few hundred years to explore Afrofuturism in nineteeth century Black spirituals. How did enslaved people imagine the unimaginable? In a dreadful present, how did they harness a useable past and imagine livable alternative futures?

This program is open to the public free of charge. All are welcome. This event will also be livestreamed and available for two days. You can tune into the livestream on our Facebook page!
