The Speaker: Dr Stavroula (Stephie) Nikoloudis is coordinator of the Greek Studies program at La Trobe University. She researches Greek language and society from Mycenaean to modern times. She is especially interested in questions of ethnic identity and cultural diversity, migration, language development and language education. Her teaching centres on Modern Greek language and literature. With Professor James Walker, she is researching changes in the use of the Greek language and views about identity over three generations of Greek-Australians residing in Melbourne. She is also a member of the Pharos Alliance, a community-wide initiative aimed at revitalising Modern Greek in Victoria and Australia.

Abstract: The discovery of Linear B in Laconia and how this changes our understanding of the region in the Late Bronze Age. 

The Linear B writing system reflects the earliest surviving form of the Greek language (ca. 1450-1200 BCE). The clay tablets inscribed in Linear B served as the accounting records of the Mycenaean Greeks. Until recently, the lack of Linear B tablets in Laconia suggested that the region may have been excluded from the rich palace societies and associated administrative networks that flourished in other parts of the mainland during the Late Bronze Age, such as the Argolid (Mycenae), Messenia (Pylos), and Boeotia (Thebes). In 2008, scholars in the field of Linear B studies were astonished at the news that Linear B tablets had been found at the site of Ayios Vasileios, located 10 km south of Sparta. This discovery changed everything we thought we knew about Laconia during this period. This talk will (i) briefly outline the main features of the Linear B script, (ii) provide an overview of life on the Greek mainland in the late Bronze Age based on the Linear B texts and other archaeological evidence, and (iii) present some of the remarkable finds from the Mycenaean site of Ayios Vasileios in Laconia.
