Our Winter concert program will start with Bach's beautiful concerto for Oboe and Violin with Laura Hymers and Alison Fletcher as soloists.
The Amatori Choir will sing three of Durufle's Motets based on Gregorian chant melodies, and, though the chants are recognisable in the individual parts, the way Durufle overlaps them into polyphony gives very 20th century harmonies, albeit without losing their meditative character.
Monteverdi's driving and playful 'Beatus Vir' has voices and violins talking to each other throughout. Lots of fun for us! Religious text but just as Mozart can make anything operatic, Monteverdi can and does make solemn texts full of joy!
Then - Beethovens Fidelio overture - no introduction needed to an introduction, but his Prisoners chorus is especially poignant in the present time, as the prisoners are allowed out of their dungeon with only faintest whiff of fresh air, of hope, but all too aware that it can't last.
And equally tragic, the program culminates in choruses and solos from Gluck's Orpheus and Euridice. Orpheus's classic attempt to bring his beloved back to life - but not allowed to look back as he leads her from Hades, while she pleads with the searing 'You don't love me if you won't look at me' which he of course can't withstand.
We have enough choruses and solos to give you a condensed half hour version of the Opera.
