Rameau zou zijn ‘tragédie lyrique’ Les Boréades nooit horen, de geënsceneerde opera ging pas in 1982 in première. Koningin Alphise is verliefd op Abaris, een vreemdeling, terwijl de traditie eist dat ze een afstammeling van Boreas huwt. Als een ware deus ex machina komt Apollo een handje toesteken: het huwelijk wordt gefikst, het happy end is verzekerd. Rameau toont zich op zijn best in pakkende aria’s en aanstekelijke dansen – nooit was een tragedie zo swingend.
