Step back in time nearly a century and a half to 1845, and imagine, if you can, 183 parishioners in a small western Pennsylvania community laboring to build a stone church that, to this day, has not seen its architectural equal in the United States.
The Historic Church of St. Peter stands nobly on a hill located on the east bank of the Monongahela River. Its distinctive Gothic spire atop the rough cut sandstone walls overlooks the town of Brownsville. Brownsville, formerly known as Redstone Old Fort, dates to 1765.
This church is a pioneer American version of the English Gothic Revival parish church that flourished in the British Isles in the early 1800's. The leader of this movement, Augustus Welby Pugin was famous for architectural work published in 1841. There are those who believe Pugin himself was involved with the design of St. Peter's, however no record of his association with this church can be found. Much about the origin of the church is shrouded in mystery partly because fire destroyed two previous churches and also pioneers worked for the glory of God and did not keep records.
It was assumed that Brownsville would be the location of the cathedral for the soon-to-be-named Western Pennsylvania Diocese. Therefore, the builders of St. Peter's provided a burial crypt beneath the stone floor near the altar and pulpit and sedilia on the right hand side of the alter - all indications that the structure was to be designed for a bishop as pastor.
The stained glass windows in the church depict scenes that have a direct relation to the parish. The superb west window dramatizes for us the first religious service in Brownsville. All of the windows in the church are historic monuments linking the past to the present.

The Historic Church of St. Peter is listed on the Pennsylvania Landmark and the National Register of Historic Places. This is an unusual honor for a church.

The Church is the oldest continuously operating church in Western Pennsylvania and the first parish in Fayette County.
