Here’s the good news: to successfully sing harmonies, you do not need to read music. You do not need to have perfect pitch. You do not need a comprehensive knowledge of music composition. You do not need to be AI, programmed to spit out formulaic intervals in an instant. 

While all of those skills may indeed be helpful in finding and executing background vocal parts, it is more important to understand that creating harmony in music, not unlike creating harmony in life, hinges entirely on the ability to relate. How does your vocal line relate to the melody, to the chord structure, to the lead singer’s and your own voices, to the overall vibe and expression of the song? How does uncovering and solidifying a harmony relate to your unique learning styles and proficiencies? 

Which brings us to the bad news: relationships are work! But we already know how to relate in life, right? Active listening, communication skills, contextual understanding, maintaining your identity while supporting another’s interests. It’s not rocket science! (It kind of IS math, and it definitely can be spelling, but let’s keep that on the down low for now.)
