Strategies to Support Discussion and Comprehension: Book Clubs, Socratic Circles (Social Studies), and Annotating in Science
During this visit, participants will examine I.S. 318’s literacy vision and the leadership decisions made to support a comprehensive literacy program that led to significant DRP and state assessment growth. Classroom visits will showcase how teachers support diverse texts through purposeful book selections during ELA book clubs. Socratic Seminars to promote discussion, and annotation strategies in science to access complex non-fiction texts. To support teacher collaboration and professional learning, visitors will engage in grounding texts, student work inquiry, and have the opportunity to engage teacher leaders during action planning time.
