Slime Mold Workshop

Draw with slime mold! In this workshop we will design the growth and shape of slime mold. We will create a maze in a Petri dish and watch how the slime mold finds the most efficient path to food.

Long classified as Fungi, slime "molds" are now known to be a creature all their own. In this 2 hour workshop participants will learn about the biology of slime mold and explore how to grow it and use it for bioart. Slime mold is effectively a supercell, a bunch of cells that gather together to form a seemingly smart and mobile superorganism.

Participants will each receive agar in a Petri dish to start their own slime mold growth design. By placing oats on the agar, the students will use food to incentivize the slime mold to reach out in different directions. Each participant will walk away with their own petri dish of slime mold to take home!
