- **Event Name**: Simple Data Networks for Multidisciplinary Artists
- **Event Start and End Date**: Fri, 30 Oct, 2026 at 06:00 pm – Fri, 30 Oct, 2026 at 09:00 pm (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: Learn to create projects involving multiple separate components that communicate together to provide unique interactive experiences!About this EventIf you're a multidisciplinary artist who likes to explore combinations of multiple different backgrounds, mediums or genres, or if you're a curious experimentalist who loves to mix and match various skillsets or software tools, you may not always find one single solution or application that accomplishes everything your project needs. You often just have to create the solution yourself!Consider these examples:- Using a physical sensor (distance, light, pressure, etc.) as an input to a computer program- Using a machine learning model (hand pose, body pose, face detection, etc.) to interface with an interactive kinetic or LED-based sculpture- Creating a handheld or wearable wireless controller for your generative synthesized musical instrument, allowing you to move around freely instead of being stuck to your computer on stage, or better yet, repurposing an existing smartphone to function as one- Enabling audience participation during a performance through the smartphones they already own- Solving any creative problem where no out-of-the-box solution already exists! For these tasks above and many many more, you may just have to break down your idea into separate components, handle each component separately using whichever tool that's best for the job, and then allow those components to work together to solve the larger task. No compromise needed! To accomplish this, we will go over OSC, the most widely supported real-time communication protocol that exists. OSC is the common language that your favorite hardware/software tool most likely speaks, and which allows multiple otherwise-incompatible programs to easily communicate with each other. We will introduce some basic networking concepts and dive right into how to send/receive OSC messages between devices. We'll work in pairs to mix-and-match different software tools together and see what kinds of interactions we can create. Time permitting, we'll have some time for creative brainstorming and ideation at the end. What kinds of projects and experiences would you want to create with this technology? Who is the class for? This 95% code-free workshop is intended to complement your existing interests and skills.Creative multimedia tools that support OSC include:- TouchDesigner- Max/MSP- Ableton (with M4L)- Processing / OpenFrameworks / p5.js- Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi- Unity/Unreal- Any iOS/Android mobile device- Just raw code baby (Python, Node.js, C++, etc.)- Many othersIf you already use or are interested in any of the items listed above, or are just curious to explore the potential of networking together multiple programs/devices, this beginner-friendly, 95% code-free (code starter examples provided) workshop is a great starting point.Bring a laptop and your smartphone!Instructor bio:Yonatan Rozin is a multidisciplinary interactive technologist, prototyper, educator and classically-trained percussionist based in New York City. His freelance and personal practice frequently explores novel combinations of multimedia software and hardware platforms in the creation of unfamiliar installations, performances and experiences. As a freelance interactive art consultant, software engineer at the Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center and avid collaborator, he has created bespoke interactive solutions for numerous independent artists across a variety of mediums and backgrounds. This is a masks optional workshop. As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct.
