Scientific Glass Processes and Skills for the Artist
This workshop focuses on skills and thought processes used while fabricating scientific glass apparatus and the possibilities these processes lead. We begin with basics including bending tubing, making side seals of various sizes, wrapping coils/spirals, ring seals and adding glass plates to increase scale. We will be Introducing gases such as argon and neon to the hollow sculptures and processing them to create experimental borosilicate sculptural plasma and neon tubes. Discussion and hands-on practice of coefficients of expansion, use of a polariscope, compatibility of various glasses and vacuum testing will be practiced. Bring your sketchbooks and imagination.
