Orton-Gillingham for Classroom Educators: Four-Day Course-February 2019

This course runs 4 full days: Friday-Monday, February 15th-18th, 2018, 8:30am-4:30pm daily.

Orton-Gillingham is a powerful approach to teaching reading and spelling.

Trained Orton-Gillingham practitioners have had remarkable success with the program’s multisensory approach for over 70 years.  Although the program is best known for its effectiveness in teaching those with dyslexia, Orton-Gillingham methods can be adapted to benefit all developing readers.

This 30-hour course prepares teachers to use the Orton-Gillingham approach in a classroom setting but will also be very useful to those cultivating a specialized tutoring practice or homeschooling children with reading difficulties.  Note that this course also serves as a first step to completing a Classroom Educator or an Associate Level of Orton-Gillingham Training with additional lesson plans, observations, and coursework needed for those levels.

Note: This is a certification-track course approved by the Academy of Orton Gillingham Practioners and Educators and taught by a highly experienced AOGPE Fellow.  Many teachers choose to take this course but do not choose to become certified by the Academy.  That's fine!  But we want you to be aware that certification requires an additional commitment and expense beyond the course.  Please read this FAQ to make sure you understand how the process works.

NOTES FOR ATTENDEES -- Please take the time to read everything!

Lunch: Please bring a bag lunch or take advantage of one of the many high-quality take-out options in the immediate area (we recommend the many options in DeKalb Market Hall, The Wei, and Gotham Market, all of which are within a block or two).

About the Instructor: Dawn Nieman is a highly experienced Orton-Gillingham practitioner and Fellow at the Orton-Gillingham Academy. Her dynamic, rigorous trainings have been extremely well-received by both new and experienced teachers.

For questions, please contact the Teacher Resource Center at bGl1ICEgdHJjIHwgZ21haWwgISBjb20=.

We suggest purchasing a green Orton-Gillingham Manual (8th Edition). This purchase is no longer required.  However, this is an invaluable reference and resource for implementation, and is NECESSARY for anyone seeking certification (summarizing the manual, chapter-by-chapter, is a required part of the certification process).

ADDITIONAL EXPENSES: PLEASE READ!

Your course fee, payable via Eventbrite, covers all aspects of the workshop and a set of phoneme cards.  Many teachers pursuing Classroom Educator Level accreditation by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators opt to purchase additional materials, pursue a practicum and/or purchase a membership.  Additional expenses for those pursuing certification include:

-Materials fee of $450 (includes over 3,300 word cards and sentences)*-Practicum Fee if working towards Classroom Educator accreditation through the Academy:  $875-Application Fee/1st Year Membership for AOGPE:  $100*While many teachers find these packaged resources convenient, others make them themselves.

These fees are payable separately.  If your school is paying for your accreditation, be sure to inform administrators of these additional expenses.
