New Year Wreath “Shimekazari” Workshop

In this workshop, participants receive all materials, and the instructor explains the meaning of each element and how it is used. You’ll then create your own Shimekazari, with demonstrations provided throughout. You are also welcome to incorporate your own design ideas to make a truly one-of-a-kind Shimekazari to bring home. * It typically takes about 45 minutes to complete your wreath. Feel free to drop in anytime during the two-hour window for this relaxed and festive experience.

Kato Jizake is made with rice from Local Great Joy Family Farm, and the Shimekazari in this workshop is crafted using rice straw from the same farm!

During the crafting session, you’re invited to enjoy a taste of Kato Jizake—available as pay-as-you-go at the bar.

About Shimekazari:
Shimekazari are lengths of rice-straw rope used in Shinto practices for ritual purification and to define sacred space. They are often displayed at home to welcome the New Year. Creating a Shimenawa can be a unique and meaningful experience—these sacred ropes are believed to ward off evil spirits and keep a place pure and holy. During the New Year, many people offer wishes and prayers for good fortune to their Shimekazari.
