Literacy PLO for Elementary Schools Part 2


Literacy for Students with Intellectual Disabilities: Read - Write - Go! Part 2
Students with intellectual challenges frequently have problems with literacy learning.  Educators may have great difficulty finding age respectful and content appropriate books and teaching materials.  Many students may have fine motor and language challenges which limit their ability to produce rich, authentic writing.  This workshop will give an overview of instructional frameworks, lessons and strategies for teaching reading comprehension, word study and beginning writing.  Strategies and resources will also include those for students who are older, yet reading and writing at younger levels.  Assistive technology is an essential tool to help accommodate all of these challenges, as well as being a strong motivator.  Examples of assistive technology will be woven throughout the day.  Sample IEP goals and informal assessments will also be shared.  Participants will leave with a list of activities and strategies to try right away!
