Lecture: "The Other Half of Art History: Feminist Creation & Critique" ? Speaker: Educator & Photographer Bette Sloane Join us for a thought-provoking evening with Bette Sloane as we examine the radical contributions of women artists who have redefined the narratives within art history. This engaging lecture will explore how these artists have reclaimed the body from the male gaze, centered women's lived experiences—be they physical, emotional, or historical—and employed "feminine" media, such as textiles, craft, and performance, to challenge traditional hierarchies. Throughout the talk, we will critique the institutional exclusions of women, artists of color, and queer artists, celebrating those who refuse to be marginalized or left out of the frame. Bette Sloane is a dedicated educator with 19 years of experience and a profound love for art history. She holds a BFA in Photography and advanced degrees in Mathematics Education and Curriculum & Teaching from Columbia University Teachers College. Bette seamlessly integrates art into her mathematics curriculum, taking students to The Metropolitan Museum of Art and exploring the connections between math and visual arts. A recipient of a national award from the NEA, she was recently appointed as a 2025 NYS Master Teacher by Governor Hochul.
