Then we will learn some basics about the lost wax technique. In the first three sessions, you will be working on simple exercises to understand the basics of the process. In the fourth session there will be an introduction to coldworking; allowing you to understand the challenges of finishing a piece so that you can plan ahead for your final project. During the following 4 sessions you will build towards your personal project; having had at least two sessions that you can either use to coldwork or to continue casting.  The last two weeks will be dedicated to learning how to cut your piece, learn cutting and polishing processes, and an introduction to other cold-working techniques that will allow you to give your piece a finished look.  Topics include mold recipes, wax working, kiln use, firing schedules. What to Expect: In this 8-week class, you will work with wax models, pour refractory molds, and create kiln-formed glass pieces. Most students complete one or two objects, each up to 1 inch thick and 4 inches high. Clean-up time is included in the duration of class, and usually the last 20 minutes of class are dedicated to cleaning your workstation. This course requires standing for periods of time longer than 30 minutes.  A particulate respirator mask is required when working with fine glass powders or unloading kilns after firing and would be provided for you if needed. Open to ages 14 and up.Pick-up:  The glass needs to cool down over a few days. Work will usually be ready the following week.This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be canceled within two weeks of the start date of class.
