Author, educator, and a jazz vocalist whose cabaret performance teamed her with jazz pianist Donald Smith, Ms. Pegram is also a painter. Her richly hued vibrant murals are part of several private collections. She has worked as a Development Associate at Scholastic Productions, Inc., as an Instructor at the Frederick Douglass Creative Arts Center and as an Acting Director / Instructor at the John Oliver Killens Young Writers Program. In 2020, she received the 2020 CBC Diversity Outstanding Achievement Award.Kweli means “truth” in Swahili. Under the direction of founding editor Laura Pegram since 2009, it has been our mission to nurture emerging BIPOC writers that “sing the truth.” With a quarterly online literary journal, year-long writer fellowships, multi-session workshops, writing retreats, individualized editing, an annual writers' conference and international festival, Kweli invests in the artistic and professional growth of emerging authors, nationally and internationally. We continue to contribute to a world where the narratives being told reflect the truth of our histories and the possibilities for our future.Naima Coster is the New York Times bestselling author of What’s Mine and Yours. She is also the author of Halsey Street, and a finalist for the 2018 Kirkus Prize for Fiction and was a 2020 National Book Foundation's 5 Under 35 honoree. Naima's stories and essays have appeared in the New York Times, Kweli, the Paris Review Daily, Catapult, the Rumpus, and elsewhere. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University, as well as degrees from Fordham University and Yale. She has taught writing for over a decade, in community settings, youth programs, and universities. She lives in Brooklyn with her family.Nicole Dennis-Benn is the author of Here Comes the Sun, a New York Times Notable Book and winner of the Lambda Literary Award. Her bestselling sophomore novel, Patsy, is a 2020 Lambda Literary Award winner, a New York Times Editors' Choice, a Financial Times Critics Choice, a Stonewall Book Awards Honor Book, and a Today Show Read with Jenna Book Club selection. Born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, she teaches at Princeton and is the founder of the Stuyvesant Writing Workshop. She lives with her wife and two sons in Brooklyn, New York.
