About the event

Community Conversation: Artists & Activism
Highlighting the history and role of Black theatres.

About this Event

In recognition of Black Theatre Day, The Billie will launch its 2025-26 season with a town hall event exploring the role of artists as changemakers.

The event will focus on the history, role and continued importance of black theatre in addressing the social and political concerns of black and brown communities.

Featuring a film screening of Black Theatre: The Making of a Movement, directed by the legendary Woodie King, Jr. in 1978. The film explores the birth of a new theatre out of the Civil Rights activism of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. It is a video encyclopedia of the leading figures, institutions and events of a movement that transformed the American stage.
