Breathing Room is a workshop for anyone who wants to reclaim the body through sound. Beginning with the breath, the root of both vocal health and self-regulation, we will unlearn shallow habits and reconnect with the diaphragm as a source of power. From there, we’ll explore breath as sound, pushing past genre and tradition to treat the voice as a raw instrument: percussive, noisy, fragile, fierce. No singing background is required. Through improvisation, group resonance, and collective chants, participants will discover how breath and voice can become tools of survival, healing, and refusal. This is not about sounding “pretty.” It’s about sounding free.

Shara Lunon is a Brooklyn-based transdisciplinary artist, musician, and curator whose work spans sound, poetry, visual art, and community practice. Rooted in the legacy of the underground, she approaches the voice as both instrument and vessel for memory, storytelling, and transformation. Her practice thrives where chaos meets clarity, blending improvisation, electronics, and found materials to explore identity, care, and renewal. Shara is the founder of Heavy Florals, a series for experimental Black and Brown artists, and has collaborated with Ches Smith, Lesley Mok, Luke Stewart, Shahzad Ismaily, and Laura Cocks. She is currently developing her solo work alongside collaborative projects with History Dog and her punk band Blasé.
